More Information on Sauna Therapy–What is a Sauna?
Heat is a therapeutic agent used for healing in many cultures. All of our body’s functions depend on chemical reactions. And chemical reactions are directly affected by heat (either accelerating or slowing in direct proportion to available heat energy). This is bound to have an effect on our tissues and our health.

A state of hyperthermia exists when body temperature rises above its normal state of 98.6ºF. Often misunderstood as a symptom of disease, fevers actually are a part of the body’s natural healing response. Heat treatments elicit similar healing responses in the body, and consequently are often called “artificial fevers”.

During a fever, the functioning of the immune system is stimulated, while the growth of bacteria and viruses is forced to slow down. The production of white blood cells, the primary agents of the immune system, is increased, as is the rate of their release into the blood stream. The generation of anti-bodies speeds up, as does the production of interferon, an anti-viral protein that also has powerful cancer-fighting properties. Steam vapors or far infrared heat raise your core body temperature to effective levels within just 10 minutes of use!

What is experienced during a Sauna Therapy Session?
During a 15-30 minute sauna session, your heart rate increases by 50-75%. This provides the same metabolic result as physical exercise and the increased cardiac load is the equivalent to a brisk walk. There is a nominal effect on blood pressure because the heat also causes blood vessels in skin to expand to accommodate increased blood flow.

Blood vessels become more flexible and there is increased circulation to the extremities. During a sauna, blood flow to the skin increases to as high as 50-70% of cardiac output (compared to the standard 5-10%). This brings nutrients to subcutaneous & surface tissue resulting in glowing healthy skin.

Steam baths and far infrared saunas induce sweating to provide a comprehensive cleansing of the skin and sweat glands. Skin is the largest organ in the body. 30% of body wastes are passed through the skin. Profuse sweating enhances the detoxifying capacity of the skin by opening pores and flushing impurities from the body.

What is an artificial fever?
A dry fever is created by the body to burn off toxins or pathogens in the body.  An artificial fever or wet fever is induced externally to cleanse and detoxify the body.

When taking a sauna bath, skin temperature rises to 40°C (104°F) and internal body temperature rises to about 38°C (100.4°F). Exposure to the high heat creates an artificial fever state. Fever is part of the body’s natural healing process. Fever stimulates the immune system resulting in increased production of disease fighting white blood cells, antibodies and interferon (an anti viral protein with cancer fighting capability). Regular steam and far infrared sauna users claim that a “good sweat” at the onset of sickness helps relieve and ward off the most severe symptoms of cold or flu.

Can Sauna Therapy be combined with another service?
Heat saunas can be combined with massage and body wraps to loosen fatty tissue and assist in the battle against cellulite.

Why do you need to get a Sauna Therapy experience?
·    Relaxation: The warmth and moisture created by the sauna melts away stress and allows for the ultimate soothing and relaxing experience. Some people find that the steam adds to the relaxing benefits of a sauna.

·    Cleansing: Steam saunas do tend to make many people feel cleaner, possibly because of the extra steam and moisture generated. This can make the sauna experience more pleasant. Of course, steam baths offer many of the same health benefits as other sauna types.

What is the difference between a steam sauna and far infrared sauna?
Steam saunas tend to generate more sweat which some people feel add to the sauna experience.

How to prepare for a Sauna Therapy Session?
Avoid heavy meals at least 2 hours prior and alcohol should be avoided at least 5 hours prior to entering the sauna. Digestion requires a good deal of blood flow to the gastrointestinal system, and therefore, limits the heat exchange capability of the blood vascular system. As a depressant, alcohol can dull the senses so that you don’t realize how hot you are getting or may cause you to fall asleep.

What things you could do before Sauna Therapy Session?
Exercise before you use the steam sauna, not after;

Use a natural bristle body brush to dry-brush your entire body before the sauna (the morning of your appointment is fine). This will promote faster sweating and stimulate your lymphatic system;

Make use of the restroom facilities prior to using the sauna;

Relax and close your eyes. Perspire freely as the heat does its work;

What to do after a Sauna Therapy Session?
After the time is up, you will cool down with cold water and spend an equal amount of time drying off, cooling down and relaxing;

Drink water to replenish lost fluids after the sauna; and

Eat lightly and don’t smoke afterwards.

How do Saunas work to relieve aches and pains?
Toxins surrounding injuries and excess fluid in joints are returned to the blood stream, relieving symptoms for sufferers of rheumatism and arthritis. The sauna also increases your metabolism, burning more calories. You’ll sleep better, work better and above all you’ll feel better.  Those with muscle aches or arthritis may find that the heat relaxes muscles and relieves pain and inflammation.  Asthma patients find that the heat dilates air passageways of the lung and facilitates breathing.

Who cannot receive a Sauna Therapy Session?
If you’re in reasonable health, the benefits of a heat session are great. If you have high blood pressure or heart disease, saunas may be good for you, but you’ll want to be cautious; check with your doctor first and go easy.  A normal heart can handle these stresses but those with heart trouble wishing to begin to use a sauna should seek a doctor’s advice. The elderly and those with diabetes or circulatory conditions should check with their doctor prior to beginning to take saunas.

How often can I receive therapeutic Sauna Treatments?
Heat treatments can be received in a series of 20 minutes – 2.5 hours or more for a period of time depending upon the health crisis.  Path of Life offers heat treatments in a series of 4, 8 or 12 sessions.  We have longer sessions depending upon the crisis.
